學英文看到生字，一定會查英文定義，有些字比較淺顯，一看就懂；有些語彙比較晦澀，定義看再多，也無法了解其中文意思，像及物動詞rib其英文定義為：

如何翻譯? 綜合以上定義的說法，如不考慮使用的語境，一般人都會認定它是「嘲笑」的意思，如:
His friends used to rib him about his ponytail.他的朋友經常嘲笑他綁馬尾。
不然，就是「開..玩笑」，如:
I thought you were being serious; don't rib me like that.
我以為你是認真的，不要那樣開我玩笑。
但，有許多情況，rib是我們所們所謂的「虧」，不能做他解，如：
The guys in my local pub used to rib me about drinking 'girly' drinks 我附近酒店的那些人常虧我喝粉味酒。
所以，翻譯要正確，了解說話的語境是必須，要傳達精準的語意，不能光看定義，不然，會被虧。
