【對焦中英翻譯】 學習英文的思考法則--論英文定義能幫你的,以及不能幫你的地方


學英文看到生字,一定會查英文定義,有些字比較淺顯,一看就懂;有些語彙比較晦澀,定義看再多,也無法了解其中文意思,像及物動詞rib其英文定義為:

1. tease good-naturedly
2. to joke and laugh at someone in a friendly way about something
3. to tease or make fun of
4. to tease or ridicule
5. to make jokes and laugh at someone so that you embarrass them, but in a friendly way
6. If you rib someone about something, you tease them about it in a friendly way.
7. joke about someone in a friendly way that makes them slightly embarrassed

如何翻譯? 綜合以上定義的說法,如不考慮使用的語境,一般人都會認定它是「嘲笑」的意思,如:
His friends used to rib him about his ponytail.他的朋友經常嘲笑他綁馬尾。

不然,就是「開..玩笑」,如:
I thought you were being serious; don't rib me like that.
我以為你是認真的,不要那樣開我玩笑。

但,有許多情況,rib是我們所們所謂的「虧」,不能做他解,如:
The guys in my local pub used to rib me about drinking 'girly' drinks 我附近酒店的那些人常虧我喝粉味酒。
所以,翻譯要正確,了解說話的語境是必須,要傳達精準的語意,不能光看定義,不然,會被虧。
