這句成語在美國無人不知無人不曉，但，在華人圈裏，真正了解這句話意思的少之又少，主要是一般辭典誤譯，誤導讀者的緣故，之所以會有這種現象，是因編譯辭典的人多半只是就這句成語的英文定義加以翻譯，而不是去看整篇文章了解其真正意思，之所以一再強調這點，是因多數讀者都不知道辭典的編譯過程，以為辭典上所寫的都是對的，如果盡信辭典，這句話就會翻譯成：「時代來了」或「到法定年齡」，但其實它真正的意思並不是這樣：
come of age (idiom)
1 長大。
She is a girl coming of age in Taiwan. 她是一位在台灣長大的女孩。
2成長。 They share the same name, but the two George Bushes came of age in radically different eras. 他們姓名相同，但大小布希卻在截然不同的時代成長。
3 長大成人。
Cambodia’s baby boomers are coming of age, getting married and looking for land to farm. 高棉的嬰兒潮世代逐漸長大成人，結婚，找地耕種。Many people who came of age in that era never caught up. 許多在那個時代長大成人的人現在都沒迎頭趕上。
4 變得成熟。
What he really craves is to come of age on court. 他真正渴望的是在球場上變得成熟。Still, singles all over the world can take heart: online dating has finally come of age. 不過，全世界的單身貴族都可以銘記在心：網路交友已經變得成熟。
5 趨向成熟。
Korean films have come of age both artistically and commercially, and have little to fear from Japan. 韓國影片無論在藝術上或商業上都已經趨向成熟，對日本沒什麼好怕的。

1成長。
He is a one-man parable of South Korea’s coming of age. 他個人就是南韓成長的寫照。
2趨向成熟 。
His trip marks a coming of age in the relationship of India and the U.S. 他此行代表印美關係趨向成熟。
3 成長過程。
He does not like to talk about his coming of age at a posh New England prep school. 他不喜歡談論在新英格蘭一家貴族私校的成長過程。
